Halloween Horror Nights: A Laid-Back Guide to Food, Shows, and Atmosphere
Can you enjoy Halloween Horror Nights at a more relaxed pace? Here is a look at enjoying HHN by focusing on food trucks, shows, Express Pass, and scare zone atmosphere.

We had a bit of a non-traditional trip to Halloween Horror Nights this past weekend. My partner was dealing with a foot injury, so we were moving at a much slower pace than usual. On top of that, she quickly realized she enjoyed soaking in the event's atmosphere far more than stepping inside the actual haunted houses.
Even though we didn't go hard on hitting every maze, taking a step back gave us a unique perspective on the event. Here are our key takeaways on Express Passes, scare zones, event food, and entertainment for anyone looking to enjoy a more relaxed night out.
1. Is Express Pass Worth It for a Slower Pace?
We purchased Express Pass somewhat last-minute, and I’m definitely glad we did. When your time at a evening event is limited, spending 60 to 80 minutes in a single line isn't ideal.
With Express, our wait times were minimal:
Sinners: 10–15 minutes
Stranger Things: 10–15 minutes
Bloodengutz: 15–20 minutes
Revenge of the Mummy: ~10 minutes (a great, quick breather away from the scareactors!)
Had I known beforehand that my partner wouldn’t want to tackle more houses, I might have reconsidered the expense. However, it completely removed the stress of waiting in long lines and gave us the freedom to move at our own speed.
2. The Haunted Houses
We only ended up doing three houses, which was a little disappointing for a hardcore haunt fan, but we still had a great time:
Bloodengutz: A campy, laugh-out-loud fun time from start to finish. Highly recommended if you love over-the-top humor with your horror.
Stranger Things: A neat experience if you follow the show, though the walkthrough felt a bit repetitive. Some of the jump-scare setups featuring the main protagonists felt like an odd design choice.
Sinners: The atmosphere looked promising, but the layout felt remarkably tight. After the first couple of rooms, it felt like there was constantly a vinyl black curtain in my face. I spent more time focusing on not stepping on the people ahead of me than taking in the set design.
3. Scare Zones & People Watching
Since we needed to take frequent sitting breaks, people-watching became one of the high points of the night.
Great spots to grab a bench and relax include:
Behind the Pizza Skull Truck in the New York area.
Right by the Chicken Shack near Springfield.
Inside Diagon Alley while sipping Butterbeer and waiting for the Death Eaters.
While Diagon Alley offers incredible ambiance, the Death Eaters' appearance is fairly low-key - they mostly walk down toward Gringotts, stare menacingly at the crowd for a bit, and slip away. Still, taking in the scare zones at a slower pace is a fantastic alternative if you need a break from line queues.
4. Food & Drinks Breakdown
The food truck lineup in New York is convenient because so many options are clustered together.
OfferingWait Time / Experience Fried Peanut Butter & Jelly Bites - Long line, but moves very quickly. Tacos, Pizza Skulls, Fried Pickles, Burned Chicken - Minimal to no line for most of the night. Stranger Things Jerk Chicken & Mac Truck - Extremely long line all evening. Plan ahead! Event Cocktails - On the weaker side. You might be better off grabbing a canned beverage or White Claw from a standard drink stand.
5. Live Shows: Nightmare Fuel
Do not underestimate how early the queue fills up for Nightmare Fuel. We tried getting to an earlier show around 9:00 PM for a 9:30 PM performance, but the queue was already capped and closed.
For the 11:00 PM show, we arrived at 10:15 PM and were among the first let into the holding area. It takes a chunk of time out of your night that could otherwise be spent in houses, but if you're taking a break from walking or touring with someone who isn't into haunted mazes, it is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Halloween Horror Nights still delivers an amazing night out even if you aren't rushing from house to house. Sitting back with a snack, watching the scare zones, and catching a show is a solid way to enjoy the event. We’ll definitely be back once her foot is healed - and I might just bring an extra friend along next time for house runs!
